Ward vision that actually wins pubs
I used to buy one sentry at minute twelve, pat myself on the back, then wonder why their offlaner kept showing up mid. The problem was not my team. It was timing.
Why most ward guides fail in ranked pubs
Most ward content is written for people watching pro VODs. Pubs are not TI games. Supports forget detection, carries refuse to deward, and mid players take every fight with zero information. If your vision plan assumes five coordinated players, it will collapse the moment someone types "gg mid" at minute eight.
This guide is written for the bracket where one good Observer and one honest Sentry decide more games than a perfect item build. If you queue solo, treat vision as your personal tempo tool, not a team checkbox. Pair this with our map awareness habits and you will stop dying to ghosts walking out of fog.
For hero and item context while you learn, browse the public data on OpenDota and role pages on Liquipedia. Numbers help. Timing still wins.
The myth of "I warded"
Players between 2k and 4k MMR treat vision like a checkbox. Drop one Observer near mid river, type "warded," and close the book. Then Roshan dies with no vision, their offlaner walks through your jungle, and someone flames support for "no wards" even though the map had a ward the whole time in a useless spot.
Vision is not decoration. It is tempo. A good ward buys decisions: smoke, farm, or reset. A bad ward buys false safety while four heroes walk around it. If you only place wards after deaths, you are always late.

Timing beats placement charts
Placement charts are fine for learning cliffs. They are terrible if you ignore when the enemy support left lane. If their pos 4 disappears at 3:50, they are stacking, ganking mid, or invading. Your response is not the textbook ramp ward. Your response is information: where did they go, and what does that allow their carry to do?
Write it down for a week. Note the minute their support leaves. Patterns appear faster than any guide promises. Combine that habit with a cooldown tracking routine so you know whether the disappear is a real threat or bait.
- Buy detection on the way out of fountain after a wipe.
- Clear vision before taking risky jungle paths.
- Treat Roshan windows as vision objectives first.
- If your team refuses to deward, play like the map is hostile until proven otherwise.
- Do not waste a Sentry on a cliff you already checked thirty seconds ago.
Lane stage vision (0-12 minutes)
Early wards should answer one question: who can leave lane without dying? Mid needs river and block info. Safeline needs pull and offlane disappear info. Offlane needs pull camps and supports walking behind. If your early ward answers none of those, it is cosplay.
Spend gold on information that protects farm. A dead carry with a "perfect" ward on the wrong side of the map is still a dead carry. When enemy supports roam, your Observer should cover the path they take, not the path you wish they took.
Mid game vision and smoke defense
After laning, wards become smoke defense and objective prep. Place deep info before you want to push, not after you are already on high ground. If you are ahead, ward their triangle and ancient path. If you are behind, ward your own jungle exits so you can farm without feeding.
Smoke plays fail when someone shows on an old Observer. Check the map before you smoke. If you use tooling, ward ESP from DOTA2 Cheats features is useful for learning routes, not for skipping the habit of buying detection.
Roshan vision is a separate game
Roshan without vision is a coin flip. See our dedicated Roshan timer guide. Before any Rosh attempt: clear nearby sentries, place an Observer that sees the pit entrance, and know whether enemy mid ultimate is available. If you cannot answer those three, you are gambling.

Deward routes that actually get done
Carry players hate this sentence. One good Observer wipe is still worth two creep waves if it prevents a smoke that ends your game. Carry the Sentry when you leave base after a death. Check classic cliffs before you hit the ancient camp "because gold." Dead heroes do not cash in gold.
Support players: do not wait for the carry to ask. Buy the Sentry yourself. Type the cliff. Clear it. Move on. Communication that arrives after the wipe is useless.
Where tools fit without replacing skill
Some players use ward ESP and map tools from DOTA2 Cheats so they stop guessing. Fair or not, pubs already punish incomplete information. If you use tooling, use it to fix habits: deward routes, smoke reads, Rosh setups. Do not use it to excuse bad pathing.

You will still lose games. At least the losses will have reasons you can name.
